Enger Tower

Built in 1939, Enger Tower, a 5 story structure constructed of national Blue Stone taken from this region, stands guard from the top of the Duluth skyline. Looking out over the Duluth Harbor and the St. Louis Bay, the green beacon mounted at the very top of the western Duluth hillside brings it to 531′ above the level of Lake Superior.

The tower was dedicated by Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha of Norway on June 15, 1939. The dedication was in honor of Bert Enger, a native of Norway who came to this country and became a successful furniture dealer. At the time of his death Mr. Enger donated two thirds of his estate to the city of Duluth. This included the land known as Enger Hill which includes Enger Tower, the park and Enger Golf Course.

There are numerous lookouts at each level of the octagonal tower, with a stair case taking you all the way to the top. Each level offers fantastic photographic opportunities from every vantage point.

Canal Park

Canal Park is home to the early-1900s Aerial Lift Bridge, which raises for ships entering the harbor basin from Lake Superior. The Lakewalk promenade passes a pebbly beach and landscaped areas, while the Great Lakes Aquarium has touch pools and a popular otter exhibit. In a former warehouse, the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace offers gift and food shops, and relaxed eateries, brewpubs, and art galleries dot the area.

Park Point

Park Point is known for the green expanse of the Park Point Recreation Area, with a playground, BBQ grills, and picnic tables. A beach facing Lake Superior stretches alongside the neighborhood, which is linked to the mainland by the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge. Migrating birds find shelter in trees and beach grass at the Minnesota Point Pine Forest Scientific and Natural Area, crossed by a nature trail.

Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center

Lakewalk

Duluth’s Lakewalk consists of nearly eight miles of paved pedestrian and bicycle trail stretching from Bayfront Park to Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park), much of it along the Lake Superior Shore. Originally built in 1986 as a half-mile path, the Lakewalk was extended over the years with the help of a local group called Friends of the Lakewalk.

North Shore Scenic Railroad

The North Shore Scenic Railroad operates excursions along the historic Lakefront Line, a 26-mile section of rail between Duluth and Two Harbors. This rail corridor served a vital link in the transportation system for over 100 years. Known originally as the Lake Division, it connected the isolated Duluth and Iron Range Railway with America’s expanding rail network. In 1886, when the Lakefront Line was first built, it was joined by a one-mile extension of the St. Paul and Duluth Railway at Fifth Avenue East in Duluth, providing the D&IR with access to downtown Duluth as well as to other railroad carriers at the Head of the Lakes.

Minnesota’s North Shore Scenic Drive

The spectacular scenery of the North Shore of Superior, including seven state parks, has earned this scenic route a national designation as an “All-American Road.” Small shoreline towns offer restaurants serving local fish and produce as well as unique shops and art galleries.

Experience the history of the shore at the 1910 Split Rock Lighthouse, a commercial fishing museum in Tofte and Grand Portage National Monument fur-trading post. With a playhouse, galleries and a folk school, the harbor town of Grand Marais is an arts center.
Lutsen offers a scenic golf course, a mountain biking park and ski area. There’s plenty to see in the vibrant city of Duluth, including the Aerial Lift Bridge, Great Lakes Aquarium, and the old Depot, home to a train museum and several arts groups.

The Superior Hiking Trail allows naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts to appreciate up close the area’s beauty and wilderness, including numerous streams and waterfalls. Minnesota’s biggest waterfalls are at Grand Portage and Tettegouche state parks.
